Poem For a Boy

By Erin Fee

Love is found in the soft and gentle way you kiss my back when you are bent over me, in the touch of your hand on my waist, in the look of peace in your eyes when you ask me if it feels alright tonight.

There is something in the way your breath catches, in the feeling of your hand caressing my neck, in the touch of your lips on my cheeks, in the soft murmurs from your sweet mouth.

I know we are not in love,

(I am falling for the feeling of your skin on mine),

I know you do not love me,

(I felt tears in my eyes at the thought of your absence),

I know we are just friends,

(You are when I feel most alive inside).

And yet,

(but-),

I love you when you whisper my name

(One day I will never see you again)

I miss you when I am away from you in the night

(You have no feeling for me in your heart)

I hold you in my arms and I let you see me and I look at you unafraid

(The only question is when, not if, you will leave me)

and they say ignorance is bliss but I say to you, no, my bliss is knowing you

(We will grow apart and you’ll forget me soon enough and that is ok).
